On Aging

A good friend of mine once went to visit her parents who in retirement were living in their olive farm with chickens and a goat and all the rural delights.
She found them high up on the branches of the fig tree, gathering the ripe figs. When she expostulated with them, how it was possible that at their age they
should not know what a risk a fall from a tree was, they replied " but we do not feel that we are 78 years old, we feel as...

When God created the swallow, a migrating bird that winters in Africa, He started to show him how to build his nest. He showed how to make small mud balls
with his tongue and how to gradually build up the nest; but He was interrupted just before reaching the point where He started to show the swallow how the nest
should get covered and have a roof. The swallow, half paying attention flexing its wings and ready to fly off swiftly after juicy flies and mosquitoes said...

The November newsletter of Just Poets, the Rochester-based organization to which I proudly belong, was released yesterday. It included a short article by JP

it a useful reminder of my duties as a poet. Hope you do too.

I missed my usual Sunday meander around the pages of SA so am here on a Monday morning (and a cold one! Brr! not ready for this!), musing over a column I
read in Northwest Poetry. The editor of five years of this fine journal, David Biespiel, makes his goodbyes in "the article, "A Sense of

Santa Fe poet Michael Smith and I have been discussing the issue of poem titles on and off for several months. When I suggested he rethink the title of a
poem he'd recently written and I had edited, he shot back to me via email: "Yes, you often suggest a different title for a poem, but often I see in
good journals that people get away with this. I'm confused.... Yeah, I agree a title that adds is a great thing. Guess I need to work on my title
